Irine Kharisma Sukandar

What is your favorite chess book?
-
I have several favorites, but one that stands out for its universal appeal is Laszlo Polgar's "Chess: 5334 Problems, Combinations, and Games." This book goes beyond tactical themes; it showcases a father's dedication to educating his daughters in chess before the computer era, painstakingly compiling all the examples and games.

Do you have a role model in chess? If so, who?
-
Instead of just one, I actually have three role models! The Polgar sisters—Susan, Judit, and Sofia—have been a tremendous source of inspiration for me. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Susan Polgar, the eldest sister, as my coach during my studies at Webster University.

What is your best chess experience so far?
-
My best chess experience so far has been making history as Indonesia's first Woman Grandmaster. Chess has provided me with incredible opportunities, but achieving this milestone stands out as a testament to dedication and perseverance in the game.

What are your expectations for the tournament?
-
To witness great chess and have fun!

What do you enjoy most about chess?
-
What I enjoy most about chess is the constant learning it offers. There's always something new to discover and explore. Beyond the board, I also cherish the opportunity to travel extensively, which is often a part of being a chess player.

The distinguished Irine Kharisma Sukandar from Indonesia will be streaming/commentating on live games from all rounds of the Lewis Chess Legends. We would have loved to have her as a participating player, but when the opportunity arose for her to cover the event in collaboration with Lichess, we were very pleased that she accepted.
